After more than ten years of practice, I can’t recall how I got involved in the industry of “law” and “lawyer” and went all the way to today. It is rare to take this opportunity to explore, and it is regarded as a memory of youth.

When I was in high school, I joined the debating team of the school by chance. Most of the spare time outside of school was spent on “sticking to a topic”. The repeated drills, deduction and attacks with my fellow students also added a lot to the boring high school life. At that time, I was younger and more energetic. I always felt that I could fight all over the world with my own sharp mouth. I never thought that it would be good to win the game, but I was happy.

Now I think that the debate experience like playing tickets really helped me a lot after I became a professional lawyer. This kind of help does not mean the improvement of the ability to express in a single language. In fact, it is more about the improvement of the thinking mode and the corresponding comprehensive ability. For example, the debate stresses that the argument of views should be logically consistent and clearly expressed. And the ability of logical thinking is just a very important ability in our lawyers’ work. In the practice process, customers are more likely to admire and recognize the professional quality of a lawyer who can express or analyze a matter in a “hierarchical, primary and secondary, and methodical way”. Judges are also more likely to be “pleasant” to lawyers who speak in a hierarchical and logical way in court, and the probability of absorbing and adopting their views will be relatively high.

In other words, it was this interesting and substantial experience of “debate” that made me choose “law” as my first major when I applied for the examination and became a reserve “lawyer”.

” Legal person ” Of course, it does not specifically refer to a profession of lawyers. Judicial and law enforcement workers fighting in the forefront of judicial practice; A legal system designer who plans strategies for the construction of the judicial system from the top perspective; The great scholars of law who have collected masterpieces of ancient and modern Chinese and foreign legal history; The law teachers who stood on the three foot platform and encouraged the writing; As well as, such as our professional lawyers working in the dawn of the rule of law, these people together constitute the common body of “legal person”. However, the opportunity that prompted me to choose to become a professional lawyer was quite dramatic, which originated from an American drama called Boston Law. Like many people of my age, I was deeply influenced by American drama culture in the process of growing up. In addition to the widely known American enlightenment drama Prison Break, what really made me have a clear understanding of the “lawyer” industry was the two “American old men” in Boston Law.

The drama, through the case represented by two male professional lawyers, directly touches the fields of democracy, human rights, sex, life, friendship, fairness, freedom, religion, justice and so on in the United States. While “professional”, “hypocritical” and very funny, it also fully demonstrates the professional faith as an individual legal person. Its content gathers most of American culture, which is all inclusive, does not avoid sensitive topics, and has a distinctive style. As a “fan of American TV series” and a “fake professional lawyer” (for the American legal system), looking back on the classic American legal dramas over the years, I personally think that Boston Law is undoubtedly a very outstanding legal drama, and there are still few people who can “stand out”.

Boston Law can be called my “legal enlightenment drama”. The value and cultural core touched by the controversial focus of each case, the outstanding professional quality, belief and distinctive personality charm of professional lawyers left a deep imprint on me as a law student at that time, and even directly affected my choice of career path.

Of course, after I really started my career as a lawyer, the difference in legal system and cultural background made me fully appreciate the huge difference in professional form and content between the two. The scene of “wearing a headband to make an impassioned speech in the court, and to uphold justice for others” has disappeared. More of it is “buried in paperwork and worked hard to work overtime, hurried between public security organs and law firms, and mechanically” read the book “in the court.

The huge gap between the ideal and the reality made me very confused and hesitant at the beginning, and also made me sneer at myself who once loved watching legal dramas.

So far, I feel that there is no established track for the lawyer profession. Almost everyone needs to experience a long and painful period of time. Most excellent lawyers have grown up in this way. Therefore, after many years of practice, I have a completely different understanding. Looking back on its influence and inspiration on me, it is obvious that the gains in the level of legal professionalism have been negligible. Instead, I have learned to feel love and tolerance, constantly shape my own professional beliefs, learn to think, and maintain kindness in ordinary work and life.

I think that life is really rich and full of unknown. A short period of debate experience, an excellent drama with cultural output value, like a butterfly waving its wings to bring storms, has created an ordinary but willing to continue to firmly walk the path of professional lawyers.
